The Very Important Business of Playing

Somewhere between breakfast and bedtime, a great deal of important work gets done.
Deliveries are made. Passengers are collected. A small wooden car travels a surprisingly long distance without ever leaving the living room. There are places to be, things to carry and people who simply cannot be kept waiting.

Childhood has its own sense of what matters.

A Job for Every Little Thing
A wooden wheelbarrow is rarely short of work. There might be blocks to transport, treasures to collect or an urgent delivery to make to the other side of the room.

A doll’s pram has its own responsibilities. Its passenger needs taking out, bringing back and occasionally checking on along the way. And the little car? Well, the little car is usually in a hurry.

Give children a few simple things to play with and they will find plenty to keep themselves busy. The details are theirs to decide, the rules are subject to change and the day's agenda can be rewritten at any moment.

Serious Work, Small Hands
Watch a child at play and you may notice how seriously they take it. A wheel must turn properly. A passenger must be settled just so. A delivery isn't complete until everything has reached its destination. There is concentration in these small tasks, along with a good deal of trial and error. Things are tried, adjusted and tried again. Sometimes the plan works. Sometimes an entirely different plan takes over. No instructions are needed. No one has to explain what comes next. The work is important because, for the child, it simply is.

The Best Plans Are Often Unplanned

Adults tend to have a destination in mind. Children are quite happy to discover one along the way.

A journey might stop because something interesting has appeared on the floor. A delivery might turn into a race. A perfectly ordinary afternoon might involve a great deal of activity and very little measurable progress.

And yet, there is always something happening.

Simple toys leave room for these detours. Made from natural materials and shaped with care, they offer something to hold, push, carry and explore, without deciding in advance what the play should look like.

The toy provides the starting point. The rest is up to them.

Back to Business Tomorrow

Business hours are over. Or perhaps not. Tomorrow, there will be another delivery, another journey and another very important passenger to collect.

For now, the little things can wait. After all, there is always more to do tomorrow.
